Life and Legacy in South Dakota

As a contract surgeon on the frontier, the first Indian agent at Pine Ridge, president of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, and mayor of Rapid City, Valentine McGillycuddy played a pivotal role in shaping western South Dakota at the end of the nineteenth century. His life and legacy reflect the issues of the day and the conflicting impulses of many white immigrants who fought to wrest control of the Black Hills from the Lakota and then worked to erect their own civilization on this landscape. This wiki offers information and a forum for discussion of McGillycuddy’s life and career and the past and the future of his home on South Street in Rapid City.

Community forum was held last Sunday, March 21. If you were unable to attend, the Rapid City Journal has an article about the house and the forum.
